Government Officials Highlight Ongoing Environmental Efforts
The event was led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Mariana Boy Tamborrell, head of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA). Secretary Óscar Rébora Aguilera emphasized that Quintana Roo has already taken concrete steps to reduce single-use plastics and implement protocols for sargassum collection and disposal.
“This effort does not start from zero,” Rébora stated. “We have been working on waste reduction and environmental protection measures.”
He also expressed gratitude to the volunteers and stressed the importance of collaboration in reversing and preventing coastal pollution. “No state can do this alone. We need real national coordination, with clear goals, sufficient funding, public monitoring, and shared responsibility. The participation of everyone—government, civil society, the private sector, and communities—is essential,” he concluded.
