Mexico City — A 12-year-old singer and multi-instrumentalist has been crowned the Princess of Mariachi in Mexico, marking a new chapter for the country’s traditional music. Nura Francis received the title during a gala event on January 31 that also honored other entertainment figures with royal designations.
The young performer, who has been playing instruments since age four, delivered what attendees described as a masterful concert accompanied by the Mariachi Mexico 70 ensemble led by maestro Chucho López. She paid tribute to singer Juan Gabriel, whom she calls her “musical grandfather,” demonstrating a vocal maturity that captivated the audience.
Another highlight came when Francis performed a duet of “El Destino” with singer Miguel Luna, earning both artists the prestigious Germán Lizárraga Medal from singer-songwriter Edith Encalada.
The gala, directed by López, also saw television producer Carla Estrada and actress Rosa Gloria Chagoyán crowned as Queens of Mariachi, while actor and host Alfredo Adame received the title of King of Mariachi 2026.
Francis completed her royal look with a gala dress designed by Zeus de la Vega and a traditional charro hat from Artesanías Lalo.
