Mérida, Yucatán — Nineteen people across Yucatán received prosthetic limbs and orthotic devices through a joint investment of nearly 500,000 pesos aimed at improving mobility and social inclusion.
The distribution took place at the Yucatán Regional Center for Orthotics, Prosthetics and Functional Aids (Cropafy), where beneficiaries from municipalities including Mérida, Umán, Kanasín and Oxkutzcab received devices to help regain independence.
The total investment for the delivered supports reached 492,992 pesos, resulting from a collaborative effort between DIF Yucatán, participating municipalities, the Administration of the Patrimony of Public Beneficence and the families themselves.
Wendy Méndez Naal, Honorary President of DIF Yucatán, emphasized that these deliveries represent more than just technical support.
“In Yucatán we work with a clear vision: to put people at the center and not allow anyone to be left behind, especially those who are part of vulnerable groups,” Méndez Naal said. “Each delivered prosthesis doesn’t represent the end of a process, but the beginning of a new stage where beneficiaries receive comprehensive rehabilitation support.”
She added that coordinated work and combined efforts are essential to advancing the Maya Renaissance led by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena.
Alfredo Cordero Esquivel, national director of the Administration of the Patrimony of Public Beneficence, recognized DIF Yucatán’s work across the state’s 106 municipalities, noting that community-by-community outreach has allowed thousands of families to access supports that impact both beneficiaries and their environments.
Cordero Esquivel said interagency coordination has benefited more than six thousand families in the state over the past year, with plans to expand coverage to 15,000 families in 2026 who need prosthetics, orthotics, hearing aids, glasses or functional supports.
Beneficiary Jesús Alberto Chi Uc, who received a modular prosthesis, shared that losing a leg presented physical and emotional challenges, but the support now provides tools to continue his studies, work and pursue his goals.
The prosthetics and orthotics benefit people from municipalities including Mérida, Celestún, Acanceh, Kanasín, Kinchil, Umán, Telchac Puerto, Tetiz, Ucú and Oxkutzcab.
