Yacht Explodes Off Yucatán Coast, Crew Rescued

The yacht Twist Party II completely consumed by flames in the waters off Puerto Progreso, Yucatán.

Puerto Progreso, Yucatán — The yacht “Twist Party II” was completely consumed by fire just two kilometers from the deep-water port of this municipality after its engine exploded for reasons still unknown. The two passengers, the captain, and a sailor were successfully rescued.

According to information from port authorities, the incident occurred approximately two kilometers offshore, opposite the beach at the height of 94th Street, where the yacht began to burn.

Personnel from the Secretariat of the Navy arrived at the scene, in coordination with elements of the Fire Department of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), who carried out intense work to extinguish the fire.

When the fire began, the crew of the Twist Party II were left adrift on an inflatable mat; the explosion accelerated the spread of the flames.

The vessel, dedicated to tourism and social events, had departed from the Puerto de Abrigo de Progreso, which allowed emergency services to shorten response times and quickly deploy the rescue operation, which involved units from the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), firefighters, and support vessels.

Despite the incident, no injuries were reported, but the alert spread among visitors and residents of the port, who observed the scene from the beach and the vicinity of the famous statue of Poseidon, a monument that supposedly watches over sailors.

The emergency kept rescue teams busy for more than 50 minutes; the vessel was declared a total loss. Authorities sent boats, a tugboat, and an ambulance to the port in case of casualties.
