Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A woman abandoned two cats at the entrance of the Guadalupe Sanctuary in Chetumal, an incident captured by the religious site’s security cameras that has sparked outrage among parishioners and animal rights advocates.
According to the recording, the woman arrived at the temple carrying a bundle that she carefully placed on the ground in front of the main door. Without showing haste or signs of nervousness, she entered the church for a few minutes and then left the area, leaving the package behind. Minutes later, it was confirmed that two cats were inside, who were found visible and apparently disoriented when discovered.
The sanctuary’s parish priest, David Martín, deeply regretted what happened and expressed concern about the increase in animal abandonment in public spaces, including temples. He noted that the church is a place intended for prayer and reflection, not a point to dispose of pets, and called on citizens to act with responsibility and empathy.
“It is sad that these spaces are used to leave animals to their fate. They are living beings that require care, attention, and above all, respect. Abandoning them is not the solution,” stated the priest, who reminded that there are associations, shelters, and adoption campaigns that offer alternatives for those who cannot take care of a pet.
He also urged people to avoid behaviors that put animal welfare at risk, as leaving them on public roads or in places not intended for their care exposes them to dangers, diseases, or mistreatment. The priest’s call aims to raise awareness among Chetumal residents about the responsibility involved in having a pet and the importance of resorting to safe options before opting for abandonment.
