Tulum residents demand security amid rising robberies in La Veleta

Residential area in La Veleta, Tulum, where robberies have increased

Tulum, Mexico — Residents of La Veleta, one of the fastest-growing real estate areas in Tulum, have reported a sustained increase in home burglaries and thefts from construction sites over recent weeks. The situation has generated concern among neighbors, developers, and workers, who warn that the frequency of incidents is beginning to affect daily life and the perception of security in the neighborhood.

Those affected indicate that the robberies are committed through force: doors broken down, locks smashed, and entries violently breached to steal valuable items. Among the stolen goods are appliances, jewelry, cash, and construction materials, resulting in significant economic losses for both homeowners and companies building new complexes.

According to testimonies, the alleged criminals take advantage of moments of reduced vigilance, especially in areas where the density of ongoing construction and temporary rental housing facilitates anonymous movement. La Veleta, known for its rapid development and proximity to tourist corridors, has become an attractive target for groups that operate quickly and with knowledge of the terrain.

Despite some residents having private security systems, cameras, and contracted patrols, they claim these measures have proven insufficient against the constant criminal activity. They also express concern about the impact these events could have on the area, which is traversed daily by tourists and workers, potentially increasing risks if the robberies escalate in violence.

The community has requested urgent intervention from municipal and state authorities to reinforce patrols, install more surveillance points, and establish specific prevention strategies for the area. They also propose the need for working groups with security corporations to review criminal patterns and coordinate joint actions.

While awaiting an institutional response, neighbors have begun organizing through communication groups where they share alerts, incident times, and recommendations to reduce vulnerabilities. For many, regaining peace of mind will depend on a combination of effective surveillance, community coordination, and immediate actions to halt the wave of robberies hitting one of Tulum’s most rapidly expanding areas.
