Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Aguakan, the local water utility, has announced a scheduled water service interruption for Playa del Carmen on Wednesday, May 21. The suspension will last from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as crews work to connect a new 20-inch pipeline segment in the city’s primary water intake zone, which supplies most of the municipality. Only Puerto Aventuras and Puerto Maya will maintain normal service during this period.

Impact on Daily Life

The temporary cutoff is expected to disrupt basic household activities such as cooking, bathing, and cleaning for many residents. Aguakan has advised the community to store water in advance by filling tanks, cisterns, and buckets, and to ration usage during the outage.

Project Details and Restoration Process

The pipeline connection is part of Aguakan’s ongoing infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing water pressure and ensuring more equitable distribution across the city. Once the work is completed, pumping stations will be reactivated gradually. Residents may initially experience low water pressure before service normalizes within hours, with areas closest to the stations recovering first.

Recommendations for Residents

To minimize inconvenience, Aguakan recommends the following steps:

  • Store potable water separately from water intended for hygiene or cleaning.
  • Complete urgent laundry or dishwashing before the outage.
  • Ensure taps and showers are fully closed to prevent leaks.
  • Turn off tankless water heaters and automatic washing machines during the suspension to avoid damage.

After service resumes, residents should let faucets run briefly to clear any sediment. Persistent issues can be reported to Aguakan’s customer service line at 073 or via its official social media channels on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

Long-Term Benefits

The utility emphasized that the project is designed to improve long-term water reliability in Playa del Carmen. By following conservation measures, households can mitigate disruptions while supporting sustainable water use.

For further updates, residents are encouraged to monitor Aguakan’s official communications.
