Chetumal, Mexico — The Procuraduría de Protección al Ambiente (PPA), in coordination with municipal authorities, will install warning signage along Boulevard Bahía at points where the presence of crocodiles has been detected. This initiative is a precautionary measure, among other recommendations, following a recent incident.
As previously reported, a dog named Max, a Belgian Malinois Shepherd, was attacked by a crocodile on the shore of Chetumal Bay near the Megaescultura. The pet subsequently died from the injuries sustained in the attack, which included exposed internal organs.
When questioned on the matter, Alonso Fernández Lemen-Meyer, the Attorney for Environmental Protection, stated that the crocodile cannot be rescued and relocated because it is in its natural habitat. He emphasized that humans must learn to coexist with the local wildlife.
However, due to this unfortunate event, the PPA, in coordination with municipal authorities, will proceed with the installation of signage. This signage will not only include a general warning but will also feature other specific instructions for the general public to consider in order to avoid risking their safety.
While this measure is being implemented, the official recommended that citizens exercise caution while walking on Boulevard Bahía. He further advised that those with pets should keep them on a leash to prevent them from approaching the mangroves. Additionally, he urged the public to supervise children and not allow them to play alone near the mangrove areas.
“It is sad what happened to this little animal, but it could have been worse if it had been a human being. It is necessary to implement measures for care and to avoid being near the mangroves and to be more careful,” he commented.
When asked about the possible number of crocodiles in the bay, the Environmental Attorney did not provide an exact figure but acknowledged that there are likely several, as Chetumal is located in a mangrove zone, which is precisely their natural habitat.
“I couldn't tell you if there is a study on how many there are because it is very complicated to know, but it is important that people know that there are crocodiles in the area and that they are very careful where their habitat is,” he stated.
