Mexico City — U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson has publicly praised Mexico’s cooperation in combating organized crime, countering recent criticism from President Donald Trump about Mexico’s refusal to accept U.S. military intervention against cartels.
In a social media post, Johnson wrote: “Our two countries work 24/7 against organized crime through the historic cooperation driven by @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and President @Claudiashein.” He added, “This cooperation is delivering real results: safer communities on both sides of the border. When our countries collaborate and coordinate, criminals have nowhere to hide.”
The ambassador’s comments came after Trump criticized Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for rejecting his offer to “take out the cartels” in Mexico. Trump told reporters: “Well, she shouldn’t have rejected my help. I offered to take out the cartels in Mexico, and for some reason she doesn’t want to do it. She should take out the cartels, because they’re the ones who control Mexico.”
Trump’s remarks were in response to questions about Sheinbaum’s firm stance against allowing U.S. intervention on Mexican soil to combat criminal organizations. The Mexican president has maintained that sovereignty is not negotiable.
