Mérida, Mexico — Uber has announced an update to its driver app in Mérida, introducing two new tools: a user seniority label and "Alert Zones." Both features appear on the offer screen before a trip is accepted and aim to provide drivers with greater control and transparency without affecting the passenger experience.

Enhanced Safety Measures

The seniority label displays the user's rating and the number of trips completed via the app, while "Alert Zones" highlight pickup or drop-off locations that, based on public data, driver reports, and trip history, may pose higher risks. These locations are marked in brown with a warning icon. Drivers may let such requests expire without impacting their acceptance rate.

"We know Mérida’s drivers value having more information and clarity about their trips. These updates are designed to improve their experience with the app," said Cecilia Román, Uber Mexico’s Safety Communications Manager.

The new features complement existing safety protocols, including mandatory identity verification for users, photo filters, AI-driven risk detection, duplicate account screening, and the ability to report inappropriate names. Uber also maintains options like PIN verification, real-time trip sharing with trusted contacts, encrypted video recording, insurance coverage, and 24/7 support.

The update reflects Uber’s ongoing efforts to balance driver autonomy with passenger safety in one of Mexico’s key urban markets.
