Two Suspects Charged with Arson and Attempted Murder in Cozumel Store Fires

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Two men accused of setting fires at a supermarket and convenience store on the island of Cozumel have been formally charged with property damage and attempted murder and transferred to a local prison.

Eduardo “N” and Ángel Alonso “N” were taken into custody by investigative police officers on Tuesday after a judge issued arrest warrants related to the Sunday attacks, which caused panic among customers and workers.

The suspects, initially detained on drug-related charges, were linked to the arson attacks through an investigation by the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities reviewed surveillance footage and gathered key witness statements to build their case.

Based on the evidence, the judge granted the arrest warrants, and both men will remain in preventive detention while their criminal case proceeds. Officials determined the fires posed a serious risk to the lives of others.

Investigations continue to determine if the suspects are connected to other recent violent incidents on the island.
