Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered two alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) to stand trial after authorities seized a significant arsenal of military-grade weapons in this coastal resort city.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Sara “N” and José “N” face charges related to illegal possession and stockpiling of firearms, as well as possession of ammunition and magazines reserved for exclusive use by the armed forces. Officials identified both as suspected CJNG members.
Authorities arrested the suspects and seized the weapons on Hipocampo Avenue in the Marsella 3 neighborhood. The arsenal included 12 long firearms, two handguns, 1,800 rounds of ammunition, and 90 magazines—all classified as military equipment.
The Quintana Roo Federal Prosecutor’s Office, part of the Specialized Regional Control Unit, opened an investigation after the State Prosecutor’s Office handed over the detainees along with the seized weapons and ammunition.
During a hearing, a control judge ruled the arrests legal and ordered the suspects held in preventive detention without bail. The judge also set a two-month deadline for prosecutors to complete their investigation, citing sufficient evidence to proceed with the criminal case.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office stated the proceedings follow Mexico’s accusatory criminal justice system and emphasized that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
