Tulum, Quintana Roo — Tulum officials are advancing plans for 420 new homes in the community of Chemuyil and are evaluating a similar housing development in Akumal to address growing demand in the municipality.
Libertad Vázquez Burgos, head of the General Directorate of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development, announced that the Chemuyil project is already in the planning stage. She said authorities are also analyzing the feasibility of a comparable development in Akumal.
“In Chemuyil, we are planning to build 420 homes. We are also projecting to do something in Akumal—we are evaluating precisely which plots are available,” Vázquez Burgos stated. “In Tulum, through the Urban Development Program (PDU), we are also assessing which are the best areas to implement the housing project.”
She explained that for the potential expansion in Akumal, officials are reviewing available land to identify plots that meet the necessary technical, urban, and environmental criteria for orderly growth.
In the municipal seat of Tulum, the analysis is being conducted using the PDU, the guiding instrument that defines the most suitable zones for new settlements, ensuring projects align with territorial planning and sustainability.
Vázquez Burgos noted that the initiative aims to respond to the municipality’s population growth and the need for accessible housing options while promoting balanced development. The evaluation of areas considers factors like infrastructure, basic services, and connectivity to prevent irregular settlements and foster communities with better living conditions.
If the Akumal project moves forward, it would expand the housing supply in the area, while the Chemuyil plan represents one of the most significant housing developments anticipated in the short term.
