Tulum, Mexico — In what was described as a historic moment for the municipality, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón led the signing of a collaboration agreement with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) and distributed the first free access credentials to Tulum National Park for both national and foreign residents.

A Commitment to Conservation and Community

During the ceremony, officials also inaugurated the new Cultural Center for Conservation, a space designed to strengthen the environmental identity of the tourist destination and promote respect for the region’s natural wealth. The center will serve as a hub for educational, cultural, and awareness-raising activities focused on ecosystem protection.

“Today is a day that will be marked in Tulum’s history. With this action, we honor our commitment to conservation and respond to a legitimate demand from the community: free access to our beaches as a right,” Castañón stated.

The distribution of credentials represents a significant step in strengthening the bond between local residents and their natural areas, particularly in a context where coastal access has been a subject of debate. The mayor acknowledged the support of various authorities, including Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, in facilitating the process.

Strengthening Environmental Protections

The agreement with Conanp will advance joint management and protection mechanisms for Tulum National Park, ensuring that tourism development aligns with environmental conservation.

“Today, we demonstrate that when we work with willingness, dialogue, and respect, great things can be achieved,” Castañón concluded, thanking the institutions and citizens who participated in the event.

With these measures, the municipality of Tulum reinforces its position as a destination committed to equitable access to natural resources and the preservation of its environment for future generations.
