Tulum's archaeological site has emerged as the most visited in Quintana Roo this summer, and the second most popular nationwide in July. It has surpassed other renowned sites such as Monte Alban in Oaxaca, Palenque in Chiapas, and El Tajin in Veracruz.
This information was released by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). According to their data, Tulum's archaeological zone attracted almost 100,000 visitors last month. This influx of tourists has had a significant impact on the local economy, creating jobs, promoting trade, and benefiting operators in the region.
The data also shows that international tourists make up the majority of visitors to this site. Out of the total 99,214 tourists, 50,299 were foreigners while 48,915 were nationals. This represents a substantial 13.79 percent of all tourists visiting archaeological sites in Mexico.
The most popular archaeological site in Mexico remains Chichen Itza in Yucatan, which attracted 198,313 tourists.
A breakdown of the visitors to Tulum shows a diverse range of attendees. This includes 2,984 teachers, 8,124 basic education students, 6,448 higher education students, 924 seniors, retirees and pensioners, and 70 individuals with disabilities. Additionally, 10,368 visitors gained free entry on Sundays, 11,675 paid for their tickets, and 50,299 were foreigners.
At the state level, Tulum is the leading archaeological site in Quintana Roo, accounting for 71.26 percent of all visitors to the state's archaeological sites. It is followed by Coba with 15,518 visitors, Chacchoben with 15,252, and San Gervasio with 8,300.
Other popular sites include Uxmal in Yucatan with 22,773 tourists and Ekbalam with 3,757. In Campeche, the most visited site was the Edzna archaeological zone with 3,948 visitors, followed by Calakmul with 2,617 and Becan with 1,532.
The INAH report also includes visitor numbers for museums. In Yucatan, the “Palacio Canton” Regional Museum attracted 6,468 visitors. In Campeche, the Fuerte de San Miguel Mayan Archaeology Museum welcomed 3,817 visitors. Meanwhile, in Quintana Roo, the Cancun Mayan Museum received 207 visitors.
