Tulum, Quintana Roo — Diego Castañón Trejo, the mayor of Tulum, has found himself embroiled in controversy after a video surfaced showing his extensive security detail, which critics say contradicts the austerity principles his political party claims to uphold.
The mayor was recorded traveling in a luxury SUV accompanied by multiple security vehicles, a display that has drawn sharp criticism from observers who note that neither citizens nor tourists in Tulum enjoy similar protection.
Quinta Fuerza, the media outlet that published the video, commented on social media: “To no one’s surprise, the mayor of Tulum, Diego Castañón, showed off an ostentatious security operation that not even Obama has. Oh, but they insist they practice republican austerity. Not even they believe it.”
The controversy comes amid rising crime in the municipality governed by Castañón. Reports indicate significant increases in robberies, executions, disappearances, and drug dealing in Tulum. Critics argue that municipal security forces are too busy protecting the mayor to prevent crimes affecting the general population.
Social Media Criticism
Once the video went viral and was shared by multiple social media accounts, a wave of criticism targeted Mayor Diego Castañón.
One internet user commented on the mayor’s personal security spending: “And that’s the transformation they want us to celebrate on December 6th.” Another person noted: “Enjoy what you voted for. Tulum with people like this will gradually be erased from the map.”
“But you voted for him, deal with it. You get what you deserve,” expressed someone else. A woman pointed out: “The only explanation is that he angered a cartel boss.” Another individual added: “The sponsorship of organized crime is evident.”
Many people are clearly bothered by this lavish spending on the mayor’s security, and as some social media comments rightly point out, it lends itself to misinterpretation and suspicion. Some are asking what the mayor fears if he claims his municipality is very peaceful.
