Tulum, Mexico — Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo has announced a joint initiative with federal deputy Ricardo Monreal Ávila to propose a new federal law guaranteeing citizens free access to beaches and protected natural areas at least one day per week.

The announcement follows a working meeting between the mayor and the federal legislator, where they detailed the plan to address the issue of restricted access to Quintana Roo's beaches, particularly in Tulum, as well as the high costs associated with entering natural zones.

Mayor Castañón explained that the proposal is the result of numerous analysis sessions that documented these access problems. “With the support of Governor Mara Lezama, we presented this concern to Ricardo Monreal, who has guided us on the legislative processes to shape the initiative,” he stated.

For his part, Deputy Monreal emphasized that the project contemplates reforms to the General Law of National Assets and the Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection. The goal of these reforms is to ensure that Mexican citizens can freely exercise their constitutional right to enjoy the country's natural patrimony.

“This is about balancing environmental care with fair access to beaches and natural areas,” Monreal stressed.

The formal legislative proposal will be presented in the coming days before the Chamber of Deputies to begin its analysis and eventual approval. If consolidated, the law would set a historic precedent in the defense of public spaces, especially in tourist destinations like Tulum, where public demand for free and accessible beaches has been constant.

With this move, the Tulum municipal government, led by Mayor Diego Castañón, reaffirms its commitment to work hand-in-hand with different levels of government on actions that promote social justice, sustainable tourism, and well-being for all.
