Tulum, Quintana Roo — A new citizen initiative aims to create a guide featuring Tulum’s lesser-known cenotes, seeking to diversify tourism promotion and highlight natural sites that remain off the beaten path.
The “Participa” call for submissions, launched by the Sindicato Tiburones del Caribe in coordination with the Universidad Tecnológica de Tulum, invites students and the general public to propose cenotes that are not part of mainstream tourist circuits. The project will compile these suggestions into a guide titled “Cenotes Secretos de Tulum.”
Andrés Hernández Pérez, the union’s legal representative, explained that proposals can be submitted via email or delivered directly to the university or union offices. The initiative stems from a previous collaboration agreement between the two organizations, which has included transportation support for students and opportunities for social service projects.
The primary goal is to strengthen tourism activity at local, national, and international levels by promoting sites that retain their natural characteristics and have remained outside major promotional schemes. The guide will collect information, references, and characteristics of each selected cenote, offering visitors and residents alternatives to traditional attractions.
Hernández Pérez noted that the initial strategy focuses on documentation and promotion, with no specific transportation routes planned for these sites at this stage. Organizers emphasized that the initiative aims to encourage community participation, provide a broader view of the municipality’s natural heritage, and promote a more balanced distribution of visitors across different areas.
The project represents an effort to combine tourism promotion with academic and community integration, bringing attention to cenotes that have maintained a low profile in Tulum’s tourism development.
