Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A double-trailer truck traveling along Boulevard Playa del Carmen veered off the road early Thursday morning and erupted into flames near the entrance to Playacar, after the driver reportedly nodded off at the wheel.
According to preliminary reports, the truck struck the base of a streetlight before plowing into a green area, where the impact triggered a fire. The operator managed to escape unharmed and abandoned the vehicle moments before the flames spread through the cabin and trailers.
Passing motorists quickly alerted 911, prompting a rapid response from municipal firefighters and Civil Protection teams. Municipal firefighters arrived within minutes and worked intensively to bring the blaze under control, using more than 10,000 liters of water to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading. Thanks to their quick response, no injuries were reported—only significant material damage to the vehicle.
Authorities partially restricted traffic as emergency personnel continued efforts to remove the burned unit and assess structural and environmental damage in the area. Crews worked throughout the day backing up traffic for hours in either direction on highway 307.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials are urging drivers to exercise caution along the affected stretch while cleanup operations continue.
