Cancun, Quintana Roo — Suspected gang members attempted to set a passenger bus on fire in a Cancun neighborhood on Sunday afternoon but fled before igniting the vehicle, authorities reported.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on El Laurel, a private street in the Villas Otoch neighborhood. Preliminary information indicates that individuals doused a personnel transport bus with gasoline.

Police said the suspects did not succeed in burning the bus, with only a brief flash of flames and fuel stains reported on the side of the vehicle, which bore the identification number 928 RN5.

Municipal police officers and State Prosecutor’s Office agents cordoned off the area, while forensic personnel processed the scene and collected evidence.

This attempted arson adds to a violent day in Cancun and other parts of Quintana Roo, which included attacks on businesses and other vehicle burnings across the state and country.

Sources suggested these acts could be linked to criminal reactions following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in Jalisco state.

No injuries or total damage to the bus were reported.
