Suspected Drug Dealer Gunned Down in Tulum Weeks After Release

Police and forensic investigators at a crime scene in Tulum, Quintana Roo

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A man linked to drug sales was shot dead in front of his home in Tulum early Thursday, just weeks after being released from custody on drug-related charges, authorities reported.

The attack occurred around 5 a.m. in the Lak’in neighborhood on Gama Street, between Orion and Beta avenues. According to preliminary reports, hitmen ambushed the victim and shot him at close range. He suffered at least two gunshot wounds to the head and died instantly at the scene.

Neighbors alerted emergency services after hearing gunfire. Municipal police officers were the first to arrive, finding the man lying on the street with visible injuries. Paramedics from the Health Department responded quickly but could only confirm he had no vital signs.

After confirming the death, authorities cordoned off the area to preserve the crime scene. Investigative police and forensic services collected ballistic evidence and transported the body to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).

Officials said the victim had a criminal record, having been arrested and turned over to authorities on drug charges just weeks earlier. He was released shortly after his detention.

No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. Initial investigations suggest the targeted attack is related to a dispute between criminal groups vying for control of drug sales in this area of the city.
