Students Protest CFE Over Million-Peso Bill in Chetumal

Students protesting CFE in Chetumal, Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A group of students from the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Student Dormitory has called for a massive demonstration on December 10 to protest what they consider an arbitrary bill of over 1.09 million pesos from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

Approximately 400 young people, affiliated with the National Federation of Revolutionary Students “Rafael Ramírez” (FNERRR), are expected to march from Insurgentes Avenue at Rojo Gómez to the state-owned company’s facilities on Aarón Merino Avenue in Chetumal.

Zeus Espartaco Osorio González, the state leader of FNERRR in Quintana Roo, described CFE’s actions as abusive and denounced that, in addition to the million-peso bill, the company is threatening to evict the students if they do not pay within three months. “This is not the first time they have tried to impose high charges on us. On previous occasions, we have had to demonstrate to defend our rights, and now will be no exception,” Osorio González stated.

The student leader emphasized that the decision to march is due to CFE’s lack of willingness to engage in cordial dialogue and establish a fair agreement that respects both the charges and the rights of the young people. The demonstration will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the goal of demanding transparency and solutions to the situation affecting the students of the male dormitory in the state capital.
