Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Authorities have restricted navigation for small vessels around Cozumel due to dangerous conditions caused by a cold front, a move that has halted tourism activities and fishing operations on the island.
The Port Captaincy ordered the temporary suspension for boats under six meters in length, including those used for recreational tours, sport fishing, snorkeling, and diving. The decision came as Cold Front 37 brought strong winds and high waves to the maritime area surrounding Cozumel, posing risks to crew and passenger safety.
The forced stoppage affects more than 500 boats linked to nautical tourism. Operators estimate that each day without activity results in economic losses exceeding several million pesos due to cancellations, refunds for pre-booked visitors, and expenses already incurred for supplies and food for tours.
Coastal fishing has also been impacted, as workers could not go out to catch seafood, affecting both their daily income and the supply of fish and shellfish for local restaurants and businesses.
Maritime authorities said the restriction will remain in effect until wind and wave conditions subside, prioritizing navigation safety around the island.
