Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities rescued a spider monkey that was hit by a car on Bonampak Avenue in Cancún on Monday afternoon, officials announced.
The Benito Juárez municipal government responded promptly to a report received at 4:31 p.m. through the C-5 emergency system about a spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) that had apparently been struck by a vehicle on Bonampak Avenue at kilometer zero, opposite Supermanzana 3.
Firefighters from the General Directorate of the Heroic Fire Department arrived at the scene minutes after the call to secure the animal, which had lacerations on its left arm and leg.
In a coordinated effort, personnel from the General Directorate of Ecology and Municipal Traffic officers cordoned off the area to protect both the spider monkey and the public while following wildlife regulations.
Inspectors from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) then took charge of the animal for medical evaluation and transport to receive specialized care in Cancún.
The Benito Juárez City Council reiterated its commitment to protecting and conserving wildlife and to coordinated work between agencies to respond immediately to such citizen reports.
Officials also urged the public to report any incidents involving wild animals through official channels to ensure prompt attention.
