Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A shootout and chase between suspected criminal groups early Wednesday left two people dead and three injured in this coastal municipality.
According to initial reports, armed men intercepted the occupants of a vehicle near a local hacienda, sparking a pursuit that ended on Calle 2 with Vallarta in the La Fe neighborhood, close to Villas Morelos 1.
The car came to a stop with all its occupants wounded. One person inside was found dead from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene treated four injured individuals, who were taken to hospitals in Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
One of the injured, transported to Playa del Carmen with two gunshot wounds to the back and one to the head, was reported in serious condition.
Three others arrived at Cancún General Hospital with injuries to the face and limbs; one of them died minutes later due to the severity of his wounds.
Following the incident, security forces from all three levels of government launched an operation in the area to locate those responsible. No arrests have been reported so far.
Forensic experts from the State Prosecutor’s Office collected the body, and the Ministerial Police have opened an investigation to determine the motive behind this violent episode that shook the municipality.
