Shocking Scam Attempt Targets Canadian Tourists in Tulum

A group of Canadian tourists recently had an unfortunate encounter with a vehicle rental company in Tulum. After experiencing a motorcycle accident in La Veleta, they reached out to their rental company, White Shark Luxury Services, for help. However, instead of receiving assistance, they were reportedly left stranded and became the targets of an apparent scam by the business owner.

The tourists, who were not fluent in Spanish, attempted to negotiate with the owner, known as Oscar, to cover the damages to the motorcycle. Rather than proposing a reasonable solution, Oscar demanded a sum that was significantly higher than the actual value of the damaged motorcycle.

Eyewitnesses reported that Oscar showed little concern for the injured tourists, who had visible injuries and were being treated by paramedics. His primary focus was to negotiate with Traffic agents to demand higher compensation for the damages. The tourists offered 15 thousand pesos to cover the repair costs, but Oscar rejected this, insisting on the original price of the motorcycle as if it were new, regardless of its wear and accumulated mileage.

In the midst of the tourists' confusion, a bystander who tried to translate the situation for them was told by Oscar not to help them, as it did not benefit him. The alleged scam attempt was exposed when Traffic agents inspected the motorcycle and found it lacked proper documentation. This resulted in the motorcycle being seized and taken to the municipal pound. Oscar was unable to complete his alleged scam and was left defenseless in front of the authorities.

The incident has caused an uproar in the local community, underscoring the need for caution when dealing with vehicle rental companies in Tulum. The tourists claimed that besides being the target of an alleged overcharge, they received no support or advice in their native language, leaving them in a vulnerable situation.

Tourists and locals alike are now emphasizing the importance of checking the legality and reputation of rental companies before using their services to avoid similar incidents. In the meantime, White Shark Luxury Services is facing scrutiny and questions about its business ethics and alleged lack of responsibility towards its customers.
