Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum thanked FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino for maintaining confidence in Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup, following violence that erupted after security forces killed Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Sheinbaum said the tournament would be a “great celebration in Mexico” despite the unrest in Tapalpa, Jalisco, one of the World Cup host cities. She criticized what she called misinformation surrounding Sunday’s operation, noting that The New York Times published a report about numerous AI-generated fake news stories that circulated that day.
The president also expressed gratitude for a tribute paid during yesterday’s national team soccer match to National Guard members who died during the CJNG’s violent reaction to Oseguera’s death. “Since Sunday, there have been many shows of solidarity with the Armed Forces,” she said.
Regarding the controversy with billionaire Elon Musk, Sheinbaum said she is still considering whether to file a lawsuit but suggested it might not be worth pursuing. “Let’s say that as a politician, he’s a very good businessman,” she commented.
On insurance companies stating that business damage coverage might not include riot-related losses, Sheinbaum said the situation needs analysis and support schemes will likely be implemented for affected businesses.
She also addressed a prison break at a state facility in Jalisco, saying federal authorities are assisting state officials in recapturing escaped inmates.
When asked about Guanajuato’s Public Security Department characterizing Sunday’s events as terrorism, Sheinbaum rejected that classification, stating terrorism is clearly defined by law and there was no interruption of communication routes or damage to third-party property.
