Mexico’s Sheinbaum Rejects U.S. Intervention in Venezuela

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaking at a press conference

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated during her morning press conference on January 6, 2026 her firm rejection of any foreign intervention in Venezuela, particularly that carried out by the United States, and emphasized that such an action “would not serve to eradicate violence or reduce violence in Mexico.”

Sheinbaum stressed that the Mexican government is against both “interference” and “interventionism,” and proposed that the bilateral relationship with the United States be based on cooperation and collaboration, not on unilateral actions that violate the sovereignty of other countries.

The president indicated that foreign intervention represents above all a violation of national sovereignty and noted that this principle is fundamental in Mexico’s foreign policy. Furthermore, she expressed that combating violence and insecurity in the country cannot be resolved with external military actions.

Sheinbaum explained that her administration’s security strategy is based on offering real alternatives to young people so they do not see organized crime as a life option, and on combating impunity without resorting to the subordination of Mexico to external forces.

When addressing the relationship with the United States, she clarified that Mexico is open to collaborating and coordinating efforts, as long as the principles of sovereignty are respected and subordination to third-party governments or foreign armies is not accepted.

Sheinbaum’s stance comes amid a tense geopolitical context following the U.S. operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of that country’s high-ranking officials, which has generated broad international discussion about respect for international law and the self-determination of peoples.

In summary, the president reaffirmed that military intervention has not brought democracy or lasting solutions, and highlighted that Mexico bets on dialogue, cooperation, and respect between nations to resolve regional challenges without resorting to unilateral armed actions.
