Cancun, Quintana Roo — President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Mara Lezama led a housing delivery ceremony in the Arcos Paraiso neighborhood of Cancun on Saturday, reaffirming the federal and state governments’ commitment to providing dignified housing under the Vivienda para el Bienestar program.
According to Edna Elena Vega Rangel, head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU), officials handed over 240 homes from various INFONAVIT projects and 457 loan clearance certificates from FOVISSSTE. This follows a similar event the previous day in Playa del Carmen’s Colosio neighborhood, where 224 FOVISSSTE clearance certificates were also delivered.
Speaking to beneficiaries, Sheinbaum said access to dignified housing is part of the social justice policy promoted by the Fourth Transformation and praised Lezama’s work.
“I thank the great governor you have in Quintana Roo, very hardworking, she knows the problems of all the municipalities and always seeks to solve them,” Sheinbaum said.
She recalled that one of the main inherited problems was disproportionately growing mortgage credits, forcing thousands of families to pay several times the original amount without being able to settle their debt. She noted that through restructuring, about 5.1 million families nationwide will benefit, eliminating already-covered debts and providing patrimonial peace of mind.
Governor Lezama emphasized that the program represents a profound transformation in housing policy by prioritizing people over economic interests, allowing workers — even young people earning one or two minimum wages — to access a home for the first time.
She stressed that new homes are built in areas with drinking water, basic services, public transportation, and proximity to schools, as part of an orderly urban development and shared prosperity strategy.
“Today the dream of many families who for years heard that they could not afford the credit or that they would never have a home becomes a reality,” Lezama said, wishing that the new homes become spaces of peace, well-being, and development for their residents.
Vega Rangel reported that Quintana Roo has one of the highest implementation rates of the program in the country. The state’s goal is to build 76,200 homes, of which more than 57,000 are already committed, representing over 70% progress.
INFONAVIT Director General Octavio Romero Oropeza also spoke, explaining the characteristics of the homes delivered through the federal program, which include services, accessibility, and comfort, as instructed by the president.
