Playa del Carmen, Mexico — This week, shark pups were sighted near the central beaches of Playa del Carmen, though no major incidents involving beachgoers were reported, according to Darwin Covarrubias, head of the Municipal Secretariat of Civil Protection and Risk Prevention.
Swift Response Ensures Safety
Covarrubias confirmed that authorities temporarily restricted beach access between 32nd and 38th Streets as a precautionary measure after the sightings, which circulated on social media. Lifeguards acted swiftly to ensure the safety of swimmers in the vicinity.
The official noted that the shark pups were first observed near Xangri-La Beach at 38th Street. Lifeguards, supported by nautical patrols, conducted sweeps of the area and confirmed the sharks had since moved away.
"They were only present for a short time," Covarrubias stated. "We conducted patrols to take extra precautions, but since they were small, we also wanted to protect them."
Ongoing Monitoring and Public Advisory
Authorities remain vigilant in the area for potential reappearances. Covarrubias urged the public to refrain from attempting to catch the sharks and instead report sightings to emergency services by calling 911.
No injuries or disturbances to beachgoers were reported during the incident.
