Maya Train Damage Report Backed by Environmental Group

Sélvame del Tren endorses damage report on Maya Train project

Following the publication of the Civil Observation Mission report on damages caused by the Maya Train project, the collective Sélvame del Tren demanded the immediate restoration of the various sections affected by the federal project.

In a released statement, they demanded that authorities at all three levels of government comply with the conditions imposed by the federal project, as serious inconsistencies were detected regarding environmental restoration work that the Federation is obligated to carry out effectively.

José Urbina Bravo, founder of Sélvame del Tren, stated: “The warnings from specialists and communities faced a publicity campaign full of lies and blunders. The investment in the southeast was not defended, nor the people’s need for a train; instead, a political platform was protected, and those who looked out for the environment and their homes were attacked as traitors.”

At the end of November, from Mexico City, the document “Observation Mission on impacts and damages of the Maya Train project” was released. In the data provided by various environmental and academic representatives, they maintained that the injunctions, about 50 filed, were of little help in seeking justice for these violations, both individually and collectively, because the Mexican judicial system, both previous and current, could not counteract the acts of authority to stop the project, despite the suspensions.

Additionally, it was reported that 20 million trees were felled in sections 6, 6, and 7 that pass through Quintana Roo, within the federal project.

Urbina Bravo added: “Today the consequences are ignored and distorted, hidden with tricks and puppets who repeat slogans indifferent to reality. To reality are added defenders who demand with the law in one hand and science in the other that they stop lying, take responsibility for the damages, and commit to truly protecting a prosperous future for all.”
