Cancún, Quintana Roo — Salvador González Morales was installed as the second bishop of the Cancún-Chetumal Diocese in a solemn ceremony attended by church officials, priests, religious figures, and laypeople from across the state and country.

In his first address to the Catholic community, the new bishop thanked those who have worked for the people of Quintana Roo and recognized efforts to spread the Gospel and establish the diocese in a young, growing region.

“Thank you for all your work for the people of Quintana Roo, for your efforts to bring the joy of the Gospel and lay the foundations of this diocese that is practically just starting out,” he said.

He urged priests, deacons, religious figures, seminarians, and pastoral agents to continue their mission with a spirit of communion and prayer, avoiding personal or regional interests and seeking God’s will for the Church and its mission.

The new bishop recalled the legacy of past leaders, including Bishop Jorge Bernal and Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, highlighting the construction of parishes, the cathedral, seminaries, and the missionary spirit that characterizes the local Church.

He also emphasized the cultural richness of Quintana Roo, particularly its Maya heritage, traditions, language, and historical sites, as well as the social diversity that defines the state. He noted that evangelization must extend to all cultures in the region, including the digital realm.

“Let’s row out to sea; we are beginning a new stage. We have a great history and are heirs to a precious legacy,” he said, inviting the Church to approach the poor, indigenous communities, and migrants with dedication and tenderness.

He expressed his desire for the Cancún-Chetumal Church to serve society in areas such as work, education, health, tourism, the armed forces, and political life, guided by faith and joy.

Finally, he entrusted his ministry and the entire diocese to the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe, reiterating his commitment to walk with the people in communion and hope.

The event was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico, Archbishop Joseph Spiteri, the Pope’s representative in the country, along with bishops from various Mexican dioceses, priests, religious figures, laypeople, and family members of the new bishop.
