Security Crisis Escalates in Tulum: Body Discovered Near Airport

Tulum, a popular tourist destination, is facing a surge in violence, as evidenced by the discovery of a body near the International Airport on Friday. This incident brings the total number of homicides in the area to 13 this year.

The incident was reported around 3:00 pm on the Tulum-Felipe Carrillo Puerto federal highway. The 911 emergency system received initial reports of a person injured by gunfire, followed by calls about gunshots heard the previous day.

Upon arrival at the scene, Municipal Police and Red Cross paramedics confirmed the death and secured the area. The State Attorney General's Office has since initiated an investigation into the incident.

This homicide underscores the escalating security crisis in Tulum, which is currently under the administration of Diego Castañón Trejo. Despite being a municipality for only 17 years, Tulum is experiencing the most violent period in its history, posing a threat to both residents and tourists.

Local and state authorities are grappling with the growing challenge of controlling violence in the region. The existing security forces appear to be insufficient in combating the increasing presence of criminal groups operating in the area.
