The fourth citizen forum on the proposed name change of Solidaridad municipality to Playa del Carmen has been rescheduled. The forum, initially set for Saturday, February 15th at the City Theatre, will now be held at a later date. The Town Hall's general secretary, Luis Herrera Quiam, highlighted the importance of these forums as a platform for local residents to voice their opinions. He emphasized that the current administration values public input in its decision-making process.
During these forums, residents express their views and concerns about the proposed name change. The initiative aims to restore and enhance the identity of Playa del Carmen. Members of the Town Council and municipal officials address these concerns. Herrera Quiam explained that the proposed name change would help to promote the Playa del Carmen brand both nationally and internationally.
Herrera Quiam reassured residents that the proposed change does not aim to erase history or undermine the efforts of the municipality's founders. Instead, it seeks to preserve their legacy and continue promoting the historical memory of Solidaridad.
"The identity of the municipality lies in its people, its culture, and its history. Playa del Carmen is the name that most residents identify with and should have been the name given at its inception," said Herrera Quiam. He also confirmed that there would be no additional costs or obligations to change personal or administrative documents. All existing documents will remain valid under the law.
"Claims that identity documents will need to be changed are false. All documents will remain valid without the need for an update. No one will be required to undergo procedures or pay for this change," he stated. Details about the rescheduled fourth Citizen Forum will be announced in the coming days.
