Mérida, Yucatán — Mexican tennis star Renata Zarazúa suffered her second defeat of the week on Wednesday, losing in the doubles first round alongside compatriot Marián Gómez Pezuela-Cano and eliminating all Mexican players from the Mérida Open.

Zarazúa and Pezuela-Cano fell to the Dutch-British pair of Isabelle Haverlag and Maia Lumsden in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in a match that lasted just 66 minutes.

The Mexican duo struggled from the start, dropping their service early and falling behind 3-0 in the opening set. They briefly rallied to 3-2 with a break, but lost their serve again as their opponents closed out the first set.

The second set appeared more competitive initially, with both pairs holding serve until 2-2. But Haverlag and Lumsden then won four consecutive games, including two service breaks, to secure the match and eliminate the Mexican team.

Zarazúa, Mexico’s top-ranked women’s tennis player in recent years, had already been eliminated from singles competition on Tuesday night, losing to Australia’s Priscilla Hon (world No. 136) in three sets: 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.

With Wednesday’s doubles loss, Mexican tennis has no remaining representatives at the Mérida Open. Giuliana Olmos was also eliminated in doubles on Wednesday, while Ana Sofía Sánchez withdrew from doubles without playing after her partner Sloane Stephens pulled out due to injury. Sánchez had previously been eliminated in singles qualifying.
