Regional Chess Tournament Kicks Off in Cancún Ahead of National Olympics

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A regional chess tournament began in Cancún on Thursday, featuring 67 players from five states competing for spots in the CONADE 2026 National Olympics, Mexico’s premier amateur sports event.

Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission, said the event resulted from coordinated work with the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports.

The competition takes place at the Sala de Ajedrez de Cámara y Asociados and includes players from Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán, and host state Quintana Roo.

Seventeen local chess players are competing in the Under-12, Under-16, and Under-20 categories, aiming to qualify for the national stage.

Quintana Roo will also host regional beach volleyball in Puerto Morelos, as well as 3×3 and 5×5 basketball tournaments in Cancún.
