  • Over 840 registered beekeeping producers are currently operating in the state of Chetumal.
  • The "First Meeting for the Honey of Quintana Roo" was led by Jorge Aguilar Osorio, head of the Ministry of Agricultural, Rural and Fisheries Development (SEDARPE). The aim of the meeting was to create favorable conditions and provide support for beekeeping in the state, helping it to thrive and become sustainable, while also encouraging economic and technological advancement and the establishment of new generations of beekeepers.
  • Osorio emphasized the importance of collaborative work between beekeeping producers and the government sector. This collaboration strengthens this vital industry in the state, promoting shared prosperity and helping to close inequality gaps, in line with the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.
  • Osorio explained that the meeting facilitated a dialogue with beekeeping producers, with the goal of strengthening the industry through the creation of suitable public policies. These policies aim to ensure the industry's prosperity and sustainability, while also promoting economic and technological advancement and the establishment of new generations of beekeepers.
  • "The Governor has asked us to work collaboratively, and that's exactly what we're doing. Today, we have legislative authorities, representatives from economic development, the Institute of Social Economy, and the SEDARPE team with us. Together, we aim to find solutions to current production issues and collaboratively develop mechanisms to create public policies that benefit the sector and promote shared prosperity," Osorio stated.
  • According to data from the National System of Individual Identification of Cattle (SIINIGA), in 2023, 2,727.80 tons of honey were produced from 54,613 hives. Currently, Quintana Roo has 846 registered beekeepers, each with a branding iron credential and a registered beekeeping brand.
  • Regarding the productivity of the melipona bee, records show that there are 175 meliponiculture producers across the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, Bacalar, Lázaro Cárdenas, Othón P. Blanco, Puerto Morelos, and Tulum. These producers maintain 3,264 hives and produce 2,772.10 liters of melipona honey annually.
  • The organizers plan to hold at least two honey-focused meetings per year, in addition to reviewing the progress of the objectives and proposals set out in this first meeting for the honey of Quintana Roo.
