Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Youth Institute (IQJ) has asked state lawmakers for a 13 million peso budget increase in the coming fiscal year to expand scholarships and direct financial support for young people and to strengthen its operations outside the state capital.
Alma Alvarado Moo, the institute’s director, presented the request during an appearance before the Youth Development with Equal Opportunities Commission of the 18th Legislature. She said the agency currently operates with a budget of 31 million pesos.
The additional funding would largely go to Chapter 4000, the budget line covering social programs and assistance, with priority given to students and young people who need financial backing to continue their education.

Part of the money would also pay for infrastructure projects and operational improvements in Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Bacalar, part of an effort to extend the institute’s services beyond the capital and the state’s main urban centers.
Alvarado Moo said the budget request follows an administrative restructuring in which the IQJ reorganized its operations to run eight of its own budget programs in 2026.
Those programs include initiatives tied to the State Youth Survey and the Casa del Estudiante student housing program. The institute also takes part in three cross-cutting programs alongside the Institute for the Development of the Maya People and Indigenous Communities (Inmaya), the Quintana Roo Women’s Institute (IQM) and the Quintana Roo Science and Technology Council (Coqcyt).
