Quintana Roo — The number of traffic accidents in Quintana Roo has surpassed 1,000 cases so far in 2025, with public transportation vehicles, particularly taxis, being involved in the majority of incidents.
From January to November, Benito Juárez reported 4,730 accidents, representing an increase compared to the 3,150 registered throughout all of 2024.
In these traffic incidents, 721 public transportation units have been involved. Taxis account for the most accidents, according to data from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT).
During 20 days of November, there have been reports of 176 accidents attended by Transit authorities, averaging 8.8 per day. Among these, 28 involved public transportation units, with 24 corresponding to taxis, two to Autocar, and another two to TTE Urvan “combis.”
In October, 356 accidents were recorded, averaging 11 incidents per day. Of these, 53 involved public transportation, including 39 taxis, four Turicun vehicles, the same number of accidents from Autocar, another four from MayaCaribe, and two from Urvan-TTE.
March saw the highest number of accidents so far in 2025, with 645 incidents. To understand the magnitude of these statistics, during 31 days, Cancún experienced an average of 20 crashes daily, tripling the statistics reported during each month of 2024.
From January 1 to November 20 of this year, 721 public transportation units have been involved in collisions, significantly higher than the 526 registered throughout all of 2024. This translates to at least two crashes daily in 2025, with the majority involving taxi drivers, totaling 537 incidents. This number alone exceeds the total of all public transportation accidents combined from the previous year.
Autocar units rank second in the number of collisions, with 73 accidents, with August being the month with the most incidents at 16. Following are Urvan-TTE vehicles with 68 accidents, MayaCaribe in fourth place with 20 incidents, and Turicun in fifth place with 19. The so-called Bonfil service reported only four accidents.
As of September, accidents are the fifth most common cause of death in Quintana Roo, with 407 deaths reported, according to State Health Services (Sesa). According to the Secretariat, this cause of death ranks above homicides, cerebrovascular diseases, and even pneumonia and influenza.
