Quintana Roo Sports Commission Distributes 70 Chess Sets to Local Clubs

Officials and athletes with chess sets in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ) and the Quintanarroense Council of Humanities, Science and Technology (COQHCYT) have distributed 70 chess sets to clubs across the state, aiming to promote the game among young athletes and strengthen local, national, and international competitions.

This marks the third delivery of training and game materials, with 20 sets going to members of the Torre Homérica Sayab Club, which operates from the Sayab Planetarium in Playa del Carmen.

The initiative is part of the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, which prioritizes providing athletes with proper tools for their disciplines and opportunities to compete at higher levels.

“We continue to join efforts and, as part of the Collaboration Agreement signed with the brand CHESS.com, we promote chess among Quintanarroenses,” said Jacobo Arzate, head of CODEQ. “It gives us joy to share that we have already delivered 70 game sets in the state. We prioritize our athletes so they can achieve their sports goals and develop with proper material.”

Cristopher Malpica, director of COQHCYT, noted that the action benefits chess players in Playa del Carmen, and that they have also supplied 25 sets to the Club Estrellas del Tablero at the Cha’an Kaan Planetarium in Cozumel and 25 more to the Club Kaab Ajkáa (Mentes Brillantes) at the Yook’ol Kaab Planetarium in Chetumal.

“We will continue to strengthen chess in each municipality, working as a team and prioritizing our children and youth,” Arzate concluded.

Alberto López, director of the Municipal Sports Institute of Playa del Carmen, along with players and parents, attended the delivery as honored witnesses.
