Quintana Roo Signs $12 Million Solar Energy Deal With Serfimex Capital

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The state government of Quintana Roo and Serfimex Capital have signed a collaboration agreement to channel 1 billion pesos (about $12 million) into financing solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage for local businesses, officials announced Monday.

The agreement, signed by Oscar Rebora Aguilera, head of the state’s Ecology and Environment Department (SEMA), and Carlos Kamkhaji Ambe, president of Serfimex Capital’s board, aims to help companies access clean energy technologies through specialized financing schemes.

Rebora Aguilera said the state faces one of Mexico’s biggest energy challenges due to rapid economic growth, particularly in the tourism sector.

Under the program, Serfimex Solar will offer loans starting at 1 million pesos for projects up to 0.7 megawatts. It will also provide unlimited financing for battery energy storage systems (BESS) with zero down payment and terms up to 72 months.

Jose Saadia, manager of Serfimex Solar, said the goal is to support 50 new projects between 2026 and 2027, calling it one of the largest private capital injections into sustainable infrastructure in the region.

The National Energy Control Center (Cenace) has identified the Yucatan Peninsula as a strategic zone due to high electricity demand, projecting annual growth of 3.9% in consumption by 2028. The hotel sector, the largest consumer because of its refrigeration and air conditioning systems, is expected to be a primary beneficiary. Generating its own power will help reduce costs, lower emissions, and improve grid stability.
