Quintana Roo, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama has expressed satisfaction with newly released statistics from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), confirming a 9.3 percentage point reduction in poverty across Quintana Roo. The figures indicate that over 177,000 individuals have risen out of poverty, marking the state’s lowest poverty rate in eight years.
A Sustained Trend Toward Prosperity
Governor Lezama attributed the progress to the policies implemented under her administration’s New Agreement for Well-Being and Development in Quintana Roo, which prioritizes support for women, youth, and vulnerable families. The initiative focuses on reducing inequality through social programs, development opportunities, and improved access to basic services.
“From day one, this government has placed the poor first,” Lezama stated, emphasizing her administration’s commitment to closing gaps in inequality.
Federal Programs Bolster State Efforts
The decline in poverty has been further reinforced by federal welfare programs championed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, including:
- Pension for Older Adults
- Permanent Disability Pension
- Women’s Welfare Pension
These initiatives directly contribute to income stability and social security for marginalized groups.
The Broader Impact of Poverty Reduction
Combating poverty is critical to fostering a more equitable and sustainable society, officials noted. Poverty restricts access to fundamental rights such as education, healthcare, nutrition, housing, and dignified employment, perpetuating cycles of generational inequality. Additionally, poverty undermines economic productivity and is linked to higher rates of violence, insecurity, and public health challenges.
Ongoing Challenges and Future Efforts
While progress is evident, challenges remain, including regional disparities, migration pressures, and a shortage of formal employment opportunities. The state government continues to collaborate with federal authorities on programs such as:
- Well-Being for All
- Youth Building the Future
- Sowing Life
- The School is Ours
These initiatives aim to enhance education, employment, and healthcare access in underserved communities. Infrastructure investments—such as potable water systems, drainage, electricity, and road improvements—are also prioritized, particularly in rural and indigenous areas.
Governor Lezama affirmed that her administration remains dedicated to advancing policies that ensure inclusive and sustainable development for all Quintana Roo residents.
