Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo has the sixth-highest cancer death rate in Mexico, with breast and prostate tumors among the leading causes, according to data from the national statistics agency INEGI.
The state records 80.7 cancer deaths per 100,000 residents. For women aged 30 and older, breast cancer shows the highest mortality rate at 51.9 deaths per 100,000.
On Friday, a mobile mammography unit arrived at the Region 227 dome, beginning a tour of Quintana Roo’s 11 municipalities. The unit aims to provide 1,500 free screenings to women aged 40 to 69.
Radiologist Lizbeth Herrera Lara warned that uncontrolled hormone use among young people, often without medical supervision, could increase cancer risks. She cited products like chicken wings, muscle-building supplements, and emergency contraceptive pills as containing high levels of harmful hormones.
“Young people aren’t aware of the risks of consuming these products,” Herrera Lara said. “Authorities need to launch an awareness campaign highlighting the side effects.”
The World Health Organization defines breast cancer as a disease characterized by the uncontrolled alteration and multiplication of breast cells, which can form tumors that may spread and cause death if not treated promptly.
The cancer mortality data comes from the latest hospital morbidity statistics and registered death records for 2024.
