“Breaking News: Quintana Roo’s Bold Move to Boost Jet Ski Safety!”

The proposed reform to the Mobility Law, known as the "Vest Law", is being touted as a solution to decrease crimes involving jet skis in Quintana Roo. Local hoteliers in Tulum have highlighted the potential for this law to improve safety for both residents and tourists.

Their concerns stem from a growing list of crimes committed using jet skis, particularly in the North Zone of Cancún. While the proposed reform has been met with resistance from the biking community, supporters argue it could reduce insecurity.

This argument is underscored by a recent incident in which a public accountant was murdered by motorcyclists. This event has highlighted the ease with which criminals can use these types of vehicles to commit crimes.

On December 7, 2021, just a week after the Tourist Security Battalion of the National Guard was established in Cancún, a shooting occurred in broad daylight on Playa Langosta, in the hotel district. The attackers arrived and fled the scene on jet skis, with witnesses reporting hearing around 20 gunshots.

In a similar incident in January 2022, two men shot and killed Federico Mazzoni, the manager of Mamita's Beach Club in Playa del Carmen. The assailants arrived and escaped on jet skis.

These and other violent incidents have led the United States Government to issue a travel alert for Quintana Roo, particularly the Riviera Maya area. Most recently, a gun attack in Costa Mujeres resulted in two people being injured. The proposed 'Vest Law' could be a step towards reducing such incidents in the future.
