Quintana Roo Officials Confirm Three Bodies Found in Leona Vicario Grave, Dispute Higher Reports

Investigators at the grave site in Leona Vicario, Quintana Roo

Leona Vicario, Quintana Roo — State Prosecutor Raciel López Salazar confirmed authorities have found remains of three bodies—two men and one woman—in a grave discovered in the Leona Vicario community, disputing media reports that suggested twelve bodies were recovered.

“We found three human remains, two male and one female, but it’s not twelve as some media outlets have reported,” López Salazar said during a security briefing. “We’re conducting the necessary forensic work to fully identify who they are.”

The discovery followed searches conducted on April 3 in properties within the community, which also resulted in drug seizures and arrests of individuals allegedly involved in drug trafficking.

López Salazar used the briefing to downplay the number of missing persons alerts in Quintana Roo, stating that approximately 95% of cases involve students and young people who leave home due to family conflicts.

“Around 95 percent are located, and when we have the opportunity to interview them about why they left their homes, they say it was due to family circumstances,” he explained.

The prosecutor added that many young people cite problems stemming from parental separation or divorce conflicts, leading them to move in with one parent. “Location alerts are generated when it’s actually a family conflict that should be resolved by a family court judge,” he insisted.

López Salazar acknowledged he doesn’t have exact numbers of people reported missing but promised to provide precise figures to avoid speculation, reiterating that 95% of reported individuals are eventually located.

Separate Investigations

In other developments, authorities announced several arrests across the state:

  • In Cancún, police captured Luis Ángel for the qualified homicide of Ramsés Emanuel and Jesús Enrique in the 204 Region. According to authorities, the suspect was riding in the back of a Peugeot driven by one victim when an argument within the same criminal group led to the shooting deaths.
  • Also in Cancún, Eduardo de Jesús, alias “El Wako,” was arrested for allegedly robbing 107 convenience stores since 2019. State police and the Mexican Navy arrested him on March 31 while he carried 43 doses of marijuana.
  • On Holbox island, police detained two men—Guadalupe Ramón and Jhonatan—alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel, who were found with 138 doses of suspected marijuana during a March 30 operation. Guadalupe Ramón also had an outstanding arrest warrant for allegedly kidnapping a man in Chiquilá to force him to cede property rights.

Regarding a separate incident, López Salazar said authorities have identified suspects and vehicles involved in a shooting last Friday on Juárez Avenue in Chetumal that left one person injured, noting the vehicles have been used in other criminal acts.
