Quintana Roo Official Dismisses Rumors of Mayoral Run, Focuses on Current Role

Cristina Torres, Secretary of Government of Quintana Roo, speaking at an event

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Government, Cristina Torres Gómez, has dismissed rumors circulating on social media and in some news outlets that she plans to run for mayor of Othón P. Blanco under the Morena party banner. Torres stated her priority remains her current cabinet position.

During an interview, the official made clear she is focused on her duties leading the Secretary of Government and does not currently plan to participate in an electoral process. “I’m concentrated on the Secretary of Government. There’s a lot to do,” she said, emphasizing it is premature to discuss political scenarios for 2027.

Torres acknowledged that legally she could run for mayor, whether in Playa del Carmen or Othón P. Blanco, but specified she has no intention to do so. “Legally I could, of course, but that’s not the direction I’m headed,” she affirmed. She added that she resides in Playa del Carmen and reiterated she is not seeking any candidacy.

The secretary also called on public officials to concentrate on their current responsibilities and avoid premature electoral distractions. She noted that thinking ahead to the 2027 process is neither ethical nor correct while holding an executive branch position. “We can’t be in two spaces at once,” she said, insisting commitment should focus on government work and the responsibility assumed with Governor Mara Lezama and with citizens.

Cristina Torres served as mayor of Solidaridad from 2016 to 2018 and later as a state legislator. She currently heads the Secretary of Government, a strategic position within the state cabinet responsible for internal policy and dialogue with various sectors.
