Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has reopened the historic Hanging Bridge Park, a beloved gathering spot for families in the state capital, following comprehensive renovations as part of the “Let Chetumal Shine” public space restoration program.

The governor announced that the park underwent extensive rehabilitation benefiting more than 6,300 residents directly. Work included painting, carpentry, metalwork, restoration of children’s play equipment, installation of new swings, and improvements to green spaces.

Lezama visited the site to inspect the completed work and observe the park’s nighttime beauty with new lighting. “Look, it’s wonderful; this place is for sharing, for enjoying, with all families, girls, boys, teenagers, fathers, mothers, grandmothers, grandfathers,” the governor said.

She emphasized that each intervention aimed to restore dignity to the public space and ensure safe conditions for community gatherings. “This park is beating again,” Lezama stated, highlighting its value as a recreational area for children, seniors, and families.

Beyond its recreational function, the park plays a significant role in residents’ physical and mental health by promoting physical activity, social interaction, and serving as an “environmental lung” within the state capital.

The Hanging Bridge Park reopening is part of a broader strategy to strengthen social cohesion and build peace through public space recovery, where citizen participation and government collaboration are fundamental.

“When a public space is rescued, the community is strengthened. These government actions happen when we all collaborate: when a government listens, when the community participates, and when people’s well-being is placed at the center of decisions. Because where there is community, there is hope. And where there is hope, there will always be transformation,” Governor Lezama concluded.
