Cancún, Mexico — Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Dr. Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (SECIHTI), have confirmed plans to establish the National University "Rosario Castellanos" in the state. The announcement followed a working meeting between the two officials to strengthen institutional collaboration and define joint strategic actions.
Key Projects and Collaborative Initiatives
The meeting outlined several priority projects, including the creation of the new university, the reinforcement of public research centers such as CICY Unidad Cancún, and enhanced studies on sargassum seaweed. Other topics addressed included the review and support of postgraduate scholarships.
Governor Lezama emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, "This meeting represents a firm step toward the profound transformation of the state, as we work in coordination with the Mexican government to implement joint actions that advance science, technology, and education as pillars of development."
Focus on Sargassum Research and Environmental Studies
A major discussion point was the in-depth analysis of sargassum, including its composition, environmental and economic impacts, and ongoing monitoring efforts at the State Monitoring Center. The university will offer programs in environmental sciences, health, biotechnology, and water sciences, aligning with the state’s New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development.
Background on SECIHTI Leadership
Dr. Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, the first head of SECIHTI, has a distinguished career in academia and public service. Her previous roles include serving as Institutional Development Secretary at UNAM (2004–2010), Executive Secretary of Mexico’s Common Space for Higher Education (ECOES, 2005–2010), President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2008–2010), and Director General of Graduate Studies at UNAM (2000–2004).
Cristopher Malpica Morales, Director General of COQHCYT, also participated in the meeting, reaffirming his commitment to advancing academic and scientific development in Quintana Roo.
The university is envisioned as a public institution providing high-quality education to prepare students for leadership in emerging fields.
