CHETUMAL, MX — After remaining stationary for over six months at a dock next to the fiscal pier in Chetumal, two sargassum collection vessels belonging to the Navy Secretariat have been reactivated to reinforce cleanup efforts in Tulum, while a third awaits instructions for its reassignment.
Marco Antonio Muñoz Hernández, commander of the XI Naval Zone, confirmed that the state government has acquired two new sargassum vessels to service the beach area of Mahahual and improve extraction performance.
He explained that the Mahahual area is shallow, and the Navy Secretariat's vessels have a deep draft, which made their operation there impossible. "They should not operate in shallow water, which is why the decision was made to relocate them," he stated.
He added that the three vessels that remained at the dock next to the fiscal pier were under maintenance for six months. "They are now ready, and that is why they were relocated: two to Tulum and another is still awaiting instructions," he specified.
