Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Municipal President Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz presented credentials to 77 artisans registered in the Municipal Single Registry, reaffirming her administration’s commitment to supporting local craftsmanship. The event underscored efforts to expand market opportunities for artisans while preserving Puerto Morelos’ cultural heritage.
Strengthening Artisanal Production
During the ceremony, Mayor Tziu Muñoz emphasized the importance of unity among artisans to elevate their work’s visibility. “Every year, our priority is to walk hand-in-hand with artisans, who have brought pride to our municipality through their extraordinary craftsmanship, patience, and dedication,” she stated.
The credentials, issued by the Secretariat of Economic Development and Regulatory Improvement under Rosa Elena Gutiérrez Briceño, aim to formalize and streamline artisanal activities. The mayor highlighted the administration’s recognition of artisans’ contributions, noting their role in promoting Puerto Morelos and Quintana Roo nationally.
Benefits of Formal Recognition
Gutiérrez Briceño outlined the advantages of the credentials, which include:
- Access to government-sponsored fairs and exhibitions.
- Eligibility for training workshops and courses.
- Streamlined administrative processes with municipal and state institutions.
The credentials, valid for one year, also seek to prevent exploitation by ensuring only registered local artisans benefit from public programs.
Inclusivity and Future Goals
Mayor Tziu Muñoz acknowledged that many artisans are not native to Puerto Morelos but have adopted the municipality as their home. “We embrace them and appreciate their contributions to our community’s growth,” she said.
A symbolic credential presentation was made to six artisans, including Josefina Vázquez, Dulce Martínez, and Alejandro Rico, the latter of whom expressed gratitude for the government’s support on behalf of his peers.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa to bolster economic opportunities for local artisans.
